Got a radio on the air - can't connect

I discovered that I had the availability of a Rocket M5 and 30dB dish that I could play with on AREDN.  Loaded the software without any real issue and mounted the radio and dish on the pole that I use for satellite antennas.  From that location, I have a perfect visible path to Mt.

newbie + Redondo Beach (South Bay) Node

Hey all.

I just got my tech license and call sign a few hours ago and I have completed the process of configuring a 5ghz Nanostation node in Redondo Beach. I have line of sight to Mt. Wilson while on the roof deck, but am not able to get any sort of signal. Although, it is probably stretching it with the distance.

I am configured for trying channel 174, 10mhz, as I think I read someplace that my node has to be configured to the same Channel / Bandwidth pair for the Wifi Scan to work. Is that the correct channel / bandwidth pair?

Will Ubiquity PBE-M5-300 reach Mt Wilson?

I have a 27 mile run from the beach to Mt Wilson to complete a relay. I can occasionally connect a standard nanostation M5 to Mt Wilson. Is a PBE-M5-300 a good choice? They're running at $89 on Amazon.

Not sure what the difference is with the PBE-M5-400 but wanted to save a few bucks.

More L.A. County coverage

Today we finalized the two 5 GHz nodes on Mt. Wilson. They are:

  • A 5 GHz node with 90 degree sector antenna on channel 177 @ 10MHz BW, pointed southwest
  • A 5 GHz node with 90 degree sector antenna on channel 174 @ 10MHz BW, pointed southeast
They have connectivity to the backbone both east and west.   There are a couple of problematic backbone links on either side of the site, but they're working for now.  We already have 4 users on the SW node.

Area reports appreciated!

Verdugo Peak

Can anyone confirm that the Verdugo Peak nodes are still up? I often check the website below and it's not currently showing anything up on Verdugo. https://mapping.kg6wxc.net/meshmap/map_display.php#11/34.0950/-118.3732

San Fernando Valley coverage

FINALLY we have some mesh presence in the SFV.  This morning, Paul WD6EBY, Mike K6MJU, Cliff KK6QMS and I went to Verdugo Peak and installed a Rocket M2 (2.4 GHz) with 120 degree sector antenna.  (See attached photos)

It's pointed due west, with 3 1/2 degrees downtilt.  It should see everything in the valley well, with the exception of an area due west of it and extending maybe halfway across the valley; that area may be slightly shielded.

If you're in the Valley, point your nodes at 34.220175, -118.289615.

Newbie looking to connect to a mode from Mt. Baldy.

Hi from W9NOP,

I'm trying to connect to AREDN from my rustic cabin in a steep canyon on Mt. Baldy with a wood burning store and an outhouse.  According to iPhone Compass:
34 degrees 15' and 24" N.
117 degrees 38' and 18" W
5,500 feet elevation.
I've looked at an AREDN map and it appears I'll be shooting down the Mt. Baldy canyon into Los Angeles County; not San Bernardino or Riverside County.
I'm understanding that I should use 5.8 GHz and a dish with a range of about 30 miles.

Wilson Vs Verdugo

Greetings, I just signed up. Brand new to AREDN. No equipment yet. Just reading and learning at the moment,
but I'm thinking about picking up a Mikrotik RBLHG-5nD, since the price is reasonable and I don't want to commit a bunch of money at the moment.

I'm in Studio City. I have a clear view of both Mt. Wilson and Verdugo peak.
Verdugo is closer by several miles. Are there different services available on each?
Should I just pick based on distance and signal strength?
Thanks

Connecting to Verdugo in Burbank

Greeting!

I am located in Burbank and I'm working to hookup to existing mesh network up on Verdugo.

I have a Ubiquiti RocketM5 (XW) (with Omni AMO-5G10) and a Nanostation Loco M5 (XW).

I have installed aredn (aredn-3.19.3.0-ubnt-rocket-m-xw-factory.bin) and was able to configure and have the 2 devices talk to each other at 30ft distance for testing.

I am attempting to connect to the the Verdugo nodes:
* WD6EBY-LA-Verdugo-S-Sector-5G - Ch: 179 - BW: 10
* WD6EBY-LA-Verdugo-W-Sector-5G - Ch: 174 - BW: 10

New node above Sierra Madre

On August 8th we installed a new 5GHz AREDN node above Sierra Madre in Bailey Canyon. It is a little higher up than what is shown on the AREDN live map. It is on channel 168, 10MHz bandwidth. The purpose is to cover the area of the San Gabriel Valley that can't hit the MT Wilson node because it is in the shadow of Mt. Harvard. The node was put in as part fo an Eagle Scout project from a local Boy Scout troop and has been almost two years in planning, raising funds, and to get all the necessary approvals.
