Rocket M5
I just got a used Ubiquiti Rocket M5 with an older version of AREDN on it.
I need to know what firmware to use for it.
In trying to reset Password/DHCP it became unresponsive.
I was able to get it into TFTP mode so I tried the following firmwares:
  • aredn-4.26.1.0-ath79-generic-ubnt_rocket-m-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin but it failed to install.
  • aredn-4.26.1.0-ath79-generic-ubnt_rocket-m-squashfs-factory.bin and all looks good on the LEDs but no network access.
  • aredn-20260114-645ce2e7-ath79-generic-ubnt_rocket-m-squashfs-factory.bin, looks the same as prior, no network access.

Somewhere this all sounds familiar on another Ubiquiti product 6 months ago but I cannot find the post, it was either a Loco M2 or  M5.

If anyone knows themagic I'd like to get this out of my office and up an a pole.

Thanks in advance.

no network access.
Hi, Tim:

From TFTP mode those 2 factory.bin files are correct.
What do you mean 'no network access'?
What network did you try? 192.168.1.x?
https://docs.arednmesh.org/en/latest/arednGettingStarted/firstboot_setup...
"After you have installed the AREDN® firmware and rebooted the device, the node will have a default IP address of 192.168.1.1."

Actually, from Linux I get
Actually, from Linux I get Cable Disconnected.
I tried pinging 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.20 with the PC at 192.168.1.15.
I installed AREDN, from ping-pong LEDs to blinking data and then scilon LEDs.
Then Power, blinking data (second LED) and after a good wait the third LED (Red) blinks maybe 3 second cycle after maybe a few minutes.
Tried pinging with no results.
Just to make sure I power cycled the Rocket with the same results.

"from Linux I get Cable Disconnected."
That looks like a web browser response.

"After you have installed the AREDN® firmware and rebooted the device, the node will have a default IP address of 192.168.1.1."
"You can set your computer to receive an IP address from your node via DHCP.
After connecting your computer to a LAN port on the node or the PoE unit, you should be able to ping the node at 192.168.1.1."

Hi, Tim:

So, if after loading the factory.bin file, (eventually) the device should respond to a ping to 192.168.1.1,
Your use of a static 192.168.1.15 on your workstation is fine.
If you set your workstation to DHCP mode, it 'should' (eventually) get a 192.168.1.x address from the AREDN device.
Eventually and since you are using Linux:
While I am waiting for the firmware load to finish, from a CLI, I
watch -n 9 "ifconfig"
or
ping -i 9 192.168.1.1

Does your M5 still return to a operational state after a cold boot?
If yes, what OS and version?

ifconfig
I did use:
watch -n 9 "ifconfig"
But it never showed an IP address.
With all testing I always wait several minutes after the LEDs look like AREDN is running.
All tests I have run from Windows and Linux that I have described.

Latest testing
With Linux:
Looking at the Network Settings, it shows Cable Disconnected (Other possibilities are Connecting or Connected (Speed)).
I have tried with the network set to DHCP and static of 192.168.1.15.
If set to DHCP I get an error Network protocol failure (DHCP Failed).
The browser always returns Connection Timeout. (IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.20)
Ping Connection Timeout. (IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.20)

With Windows:
I have tried with the network set to DHCP and static of 192.168.1.15.
Looking at the Network Settings, it shows no IP Address if set to DHCP.
If set to DHCP I don't get an IP Address.
The browser always returns Connection Timeout. (IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.20)
Ping Connection Timeout. (IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.20)

From cellphone WiFi:
I see MeshNode, no internet, IP 192.168.1.14
It connects and browsing I get 'Does not support secure connection" and I connect anyways but I get "Site refused connection".
If I power off the Rocket it goes away.

From NanoStation loco M5:
Connected to just a computer DHCP, It connects with IP 10.16.189.36.
I can browse to the Node.
It shows no neighbors.
WiFi Signal shows Red at -100, Green at botton -120.
WiFi Scan shows 1 entry
Mode My Ad-Hoc Mesh
Enable Mesh on my Desktop router (hAP ac lite) and only see the M5 and the M5 see the hAP.
WiFi Scan now shows both the hAP and the M5
WiFi Signal shows local (-29) and remote (-45).

Just for reference:
I have setup the following:
  • 2 Ubiquiti NanoStation M2
  • 2 Ubiquiti NanoStation Loco M5
  • 2 Ubiquiti LiteBeam AC
  • 2 Mikrotik SXT 5 AC
  • 1 MikroTik RouterBOARD 952Ui-5ac2nD (hAP ac lite)
I had an issue with one of the M2s, similar to this, it took the firmware and looked like it was up via the LEDs but no wired connection.
Someone here said it has a different Bootloader and to try a different version of firmware.
That unit is currently offline and not local to me or I would see what version firmware it has.
Unfortunately the only thing deployed is the hAP, the others are at locations to be deployed but not in service.
