San Francisco Wireless Emergency Mesh (SFWEM)

Hi All,

I'm in the process of standing-up a wireless mesh in the city based on the great work done by the folks in the east bay. Thus far I have three nodes online and am looking forward to interconnecting with others in the city interested in participating. Depending on how you look at it, the city's urban landscape and property bureaucracy make installing permanent and dedicated mesh endpoints challenging.

I've taken to calling this mesh the "San Francisco Wireless Emergency Mesh" (SFWEM). The nodes I have are configured as follows:

  • W2GMD-SUNSET: 1437 38th Ave (co-located with the SUNSET APRS Gate at my QTH)
    • Gateway Node
      • 2.4 GHz
        • Channel: -2
        • Channel Width: 10 MHz
        • SSID: AREDN-10-v3
      • 5 GHz
        • Channel: 179 (5.5895 GHz)
        • Channel Width: 10 MHz
        • SSID: AREDN-10-v3
      • 900 MHz TK
  • W2GMD-ORION: 208 Utah Street (my office)
    • Gateway Node
      • 2.4 GHz
        • Channel: -2
        • Channel Width: 10 MHz
        • SSID: AREDN-10-v3
      • 5 GHz
        • Channel: 179 (5.5895 GHz)
        • Channel Width: 10 MHz
        • SSID: AREDN-10-v3
      • 900 MHz TK
  • W2GMD-9: My Car (aka W2GMD-9 on APRS)
    • Gateway Node
      • 2.4 GHz
        • Channel: -2
        • Channel Width: 10 MHz
        • SSID: AREDN-10-v3
      • 5 GHz
        • Channel: 179 (5.5895 GHz)
        • Channel Width: 10 MHz
        • SSID: AREDN-10-v3

I have plenty of spare equipment in case anyone is looking to try-before-they-buy.

Going south is GOOD!
I am trying to do the same thing in Morgan Hill and we have Chris, KE6MTO, in Hollister who would like neighbors as well!

When you look at other areas of the country,  you scratch your head and wonder, "What up!!!" This place has Silicon Valley but no techies interested in broadband mesh???

Thank you for echoing my call at the northern end!

See my post at  http://www.aredn.org/content/morgan-hill-aredn-node-24-ghz-ch-2-would-ne...

Spread the word!

Let's fill in the blank space in between us.

Greg,
Greg,
Incredibly excited to see this taking off - I've been interested in setting up a mesh in SF for a while, but didn't have a particularly great place for equipment until very recently.

On that note, my new office is on the 23rd floor of One California, which provides some great views to the East Bay. Berkeley is definitely in view, and possibly the USS Hornet as well. We also have good LOS up to the top of Nob Hill, and to several other highrises downtown. If you'd be willing to loan some gear (or swing by one evening with it all), I'd be happy ot see if we can't get a link from the East Bay into the city.

Getting it out of FiDi will be tricky, though. I know CARLA has a repeater very close by on a higher building - maybe we could borrow some space? - and there are plenty of spots on top of Nob Hill that might be willing to lend space for the sake of community service. Likewise, we do have a slightly obstructed view down Market St., and might be able to bounce the signal down that way for someone else to pick up in the Lower Market area. The Auxiliary Communication Service is also trying to get back onboard with Packet data, and might take an interest, as would SFARC. Happy to help work all those angles.

Hornet
If you can see the hornet that's very promising. Mathison from the Hornet's radio club already has some gear pointing towards the city on 2/5/9, so we can probably get him to steer it towards your office.

I'm pretty busy this week, but lets shoot for a time next week to get together. w2gmd@undef.net

New Office Results

Well, it's been a bit (And I have a new office!), but from 301 Howard I can just barely see wb6tae's wb6tae-1998.local.mesh over in Berkeley. From the other side of the office, I have a full view of Sutro, where W6PW has a repeater. I wonder if we could work with them to colocate a few nodes?

Let me turn my M2 Dish @ SF

Let me turn my M2 Dish @ the city, and see if you can pick it up?

The N6BRK had ...and probably still has a NO Internet policy. I on the other hand I maintain a Tunnel server. I'm located in the WEST Berkeley.

Sounds Good

LMK When you've got it pointed and I can set the gear back up to test. I haven't done a permanent install yet, given it's my companies' office and not my office.

Worst case, the Nanobridge isn't quite powerful enough and I need to get a PowerBeam for that side of the link. There's also the question of what to do with the signal once I have it: Getting it outside of the urban canyon and up onto a hill would be ideal, but if anything this at least shows a link is possible.

Its pointed.
Its pointed.

Depending on your LOS from your office you might be able to hit The Hub nodes in Richmond all tho its on Ch 1 and not -2. lookup kj6dzb-4 via APRS.

Gotcha
Alas I'm a bit of a mess this week, and haven't gotten back to the office to point and test this - but hoping to do so tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!

Ubiquiti Rocket M5 XW Available to add to the SF mesh
I have a Ubiquiti Rocket M5 XW flashed with the latest firmware.  Currently located in the City but on the south face of Mount Davidson @ 400' elevation. My place has a direct view of San Bruno Mountain across the valley to the south as well as SFO/San Mateo Bridge through a gap in the terrain. Daly City to the west.  Hunters Point to the east.  Haven't found any other 5 GHZ nodes to mesh to with a quick test on my deck.  Any ideas how we might link the south side of the city into the existing mesh?  We need some way to wrap RF around Davidson/Twin Peaks near SF State or north Daly City.  Or possibly Oakland?

Best,

Jim

I have a site in Alameda, if
I have a site in Alameda, if you have LOS. Another site in Richmond, Im working on a Site up at LBNL that is specifically for links into Oakland and SF. you will likely need a dedicated Dish to get in with a reliable signal.

Let me know If you have a map?

Alameda is a great place, just not one I can see...
Ah.  My current node has an Omni antenna, though it has decent performance @ 12dbi.  My address at 357 Melrose Ave, with a line of sight through Hunters Point, gets me LOS around Oakland Airport down to Tony Lema Golf Course on the East Bay side.   Terrain blocks me from LOS too much further north.

Added a new 5G node in Bernal Heights
Hi All,
I've added a Aredn flashed NanoBridge 5M on channel 179 / 10Mhz width pointing downtown. I'm not seeing any other nodes (I have the big 25th St Telco Building and the US Bank building blocking some of my view) right now.

I'll keep playing around with my pointing but wanted to get word out that I have it up.

If you can see the old St Luke's building from a downtown location you likely have line of sight on me)

Regards,
