AREDN world map
Does anyone know why nodes drop off the world map that were there before. I noticed that all the Boise area nodes as well as my nodes that are tunneled there have disapeared off the map?

why nodes drop off the world map
Hi, Scott:

Because they are not linked with a node on the world map.

More on links
Scott, while the mapper picks them up immediately, when they are no longer found the mapper drops them after being missing for 7 days.

World Map Action
Scott -
It appears that AREDN World Map locations do not change very often.  This may be related to how nodes that are no longer active remain on the map for a while.  Upshot is that you should be very sure that you have the exact lat-long (0.000 01 degree of latitude is about 3.7 ft) for your node before you are connected to the Supernode network where the Mapper will find you.
The tool in the New UI is great for this.  You click the location window in the lower left corner of the Status screen.  If your node has access to Internet, a mapping window will open.  You can zoom in to see the rooms of your house.  Then position the crosshairs at the point where the node will be.   Then save that location.
It is the same way with node names.  If you change the name of a node after it is on the Map, it may take days for the Map to reflect the change.  Just be patient.

Local Boise-Area Coordinator Looking into it now
Hello Scott. I noticed the same thing you did, and did not completely understand the responses in this thread. I contacted the local Boise-area coordinator, and he said that the Supernode seems currently unreachable. He is working on getting this fixed.  ;-)

AREDN Map
Scott -
Not sure what you did not understand, but this may help.
Associated with the AREDN World Map is a hard-working system of software nominally known as the mapper.  On the order of four times a day, it probes the entire Supernode network, reading elements of data from all the Supernodes and from every node that is directly or indirectly attached to the Supernodes.  This includes location, firmware version, node hardware, directional antenna AZ/ELs, RF status, neighbor nodes, and date/time last seen.  All this info is available on the Map by clicking the node's pin.
If your node is not linked to a Supernode's gateway, your node will no longer appear on the map on the order of one week after your link goes stale.

Supernode, not local mesh nodes
Hey Tim. Thanks. I understood the bit about local nodes and how the mapper picks them up or purges them after inactivity. As it turns out, the Supernode for our area is misbehaving for some reason, so the normally dozens of local mesh nodes in the area here disappeared. I suspect that once the manager of our Supernode gets it back online, all of those local mesh nodes will reappear on the World Map.

Idaho Supernode?
Scott -
Do I see on AREDN Map that your Idaho Supernode does not appear?  I think I saw no nodes in Idaho this morning. Sounds like problem is deeper than just connections from Supernode gateway to your local mesh.
Hopefully will be fixed soon.-Tim K5RA

Boise Back on the Board!
Hello Scott-WK7G. Good news. The local Supernode has been rebooted, and the nodes in the Boise area are now showing again on the AREDN world map.
