Why are there two different firmware downloads for the subject devices? They appear to use the same radio and the difference is
Looking at the brochure on these devices, it appears the difference is 391mm versus 550mm dish diameter.

Running '/usr/local/bin/get_boardid' on our 'XL' units returns: MikroTik RouterBOARD LHG 5HPnD
And, trying to install the 'XL' version of the firmware returns:
Firmware CANNOT be updated
firmware file is not valid: firmware device match failed
- This installs and works okay:
aredn-20230922-57e0d04-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
- This will not install:
aredn-20230922-57e0d04-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-xl-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
Maybe I'm missing something?

Hi, Mike:
It is a somewhat recent 'convention' of the developers to have individually named firmware for each individually named device.
73, Chuck
It's because the upstream parent project (OpenWRT.org) went to this release structure.
Thanks guys.
So even though our devices are the 'RBLHG-5HPnD-XL' models, we can only install the non-XL version of the firmware. That's fine, as it all works. It makes me wonder if anyone is able to use the XL version and if so, what model they have.
73 - Mike
We have a LHG5HPXL operating with the regular 5HP Firmware installed. Attempts to upgrade with 5HPXL Firmware reports a firmware mismatch.
Hi, Tom:
Yep. Happened to me too.
Once you get non-XL loaded onto an XL device, you will need to force load the XL firmware to update/upgrade.
I was a 'happy camper' when the same firmware could be installed on SXT/LHG devices.

Again with my MikroTik RBLHG-5HPnD-XL:
Now running with Nightly 20231219-cd4b991, the new "antenna" display shows up as: 24.5 dBi 10.4° Dish
It should indicate 27dBi.
I don't know if the displayed 10.4° is correct.
- Mike
My (Nightly 20231219):
I installed this FW:
aredn-20231219-cd4b991-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
What FW did you install?
When I try to install this FW:
MikroTik RouterBOARD LHG 5HPnD-XL (LHG 5)
It says "Firmware CANNOT be updated the uploaded file is not recognized"
Am I supposed to enable the dangerous upgrade?
And by the way, I found another problem (non AREDN related;on my PC only) in that my stored location was too deep into the allowed file/directory name length such that it was truncating the name of the firmware! I resolved that but using a higher-level directory but, I still get the same error when trying to install the FW.
- Mike
Hi, Mike:
I installed this FW:
aredn-20231219-cd4b991-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
aredn-20231219-cd4b991-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-xl-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
What FW did you install?
73, Chuck
It looks like you listed the FW twice.
I marked your entire FW name (the first one) then did a search on that exact name at:
http://downloads.arednmesh.org/snapshots/targets/ath79/mikrotik/
Then it installed just fine.
Now for me to go figure out what went wrong on my end. I had been using the FW selector...maybe I just continually selected the wrong one.
Thanks!
- Mike
I answered too fast...
I'm still back to my original problem of the "Antenna;" showing this: 24.5 dBi 10.4°
I'm quite sure the gain should be 27 dBi.
- Mike
And of course trying to install the XL version:
aredn-20231219-cd4b991-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-xl-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
Will not go.
- Mike
Dangerous Upgrade Disables all safety checks usually applied when upgrading firmware
in Advanced Configuration before loading the upgrade.
73, Chuck
I selected the dangerous upgrade then I was able to load in the HP/XL firmware to get the correct antenna dBi and beamwidth.
It's not the solution I was hoping for but it works.
73 - Mike
Just be VERY careful to load the correct filename!
Yes, I also thought about that being the case.
I noticed after the upgrade that the dangerous upgrade option has turned itself back off. So, maybe I am good for future XL upgrades without selecting dangerous upgrade. I suppose the next nightly I will will verify that.
- Mike
Jim - yes, that apparently was the problem as this morning I installed the next nightly:
aredn-20231220-e5bd9bc-ath79-mikrotik-mikrotik_routerboard-lhg-5hpnd-xl-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
Dangerous upgrade was off and the install went with no errors or warnings.
Case closed.
