Development Code Branch Now Available

Last year AREDN moved away from a formal set of beta test scripts and dedicated testers to a more agile beta general-release model.  Users were eager to get their hands on features they requested months earlier and help us test in preparation for a production release.   While we have been happy with the results, we have noticed that features that take a long time to develop only see the light of day months after development.  We have no easy way to learn from them before beta release.  Today, this is changing.

We are going to give anyone who wants it, access to the AREDN development branch builds, which includes the latest features we are developing… even before we are done with them!

We have been criticized by some for putting out too many releases.  Our philosophy, which does differ from some other organizations, is very much aligned to the vast majority of open source projects in the industry.  We are completely committed to following this successful model. It is an approach that is more suitable to our nature characterized by: dynamic requirements, a small number of developers, a culture that readily responds to change, and a user community of hams comprised of a highly technical subset who are mature enough to distinguish bleeding-edge from production-ready software.

AREDN uses a continuous integration build server (Jenkins)...

Private Messaging Available

Are you a bit reluctant to put your email address in a Forum post? Or do you just want to save a bit of time when contacting an AREDN community member directly?

Well, you are in luck! There is a very easy way to use the messaging feature of the AREDN website.

You can also just click on the poster's callsign in a Forum post or in search results which show "published by" the callsign of interest. When you click on the callsign it will bring up that person's profile. This last tab on the right side of the profile is Contact. When you select that tab, it opens up a message form that will be sent to the selected callsign - without the need to keep putting email addresses in Forum posts.

When seeking direct replies to your next Forum post, give it a try by asking responders to click on your callsign and save a bit of typing.

AREDN at the 2016 NYC Marathon

The New York City – Tata Consultancy Services (NYC TCS) Marathon is a hugely visible annual event. This early November road race draws runners from around the world. A record 51,388 finishers crossed the finish line on Sunday, November 6, 2016, making it the largest marathon in the world in history.

More than one million spectators and thousands of volunteers line the city streets in support of the runners, while millions more watch the television broadcast in 175 countries and territories, including viewers in the New York area on WABC-TV, Channel 7, nationally on ESPN2, and via various international broadcast partners.

A vast cadre of amateur radio operators provide essential communications to support the safety of race participants and organizers.  An AREDN mesh network and associated Voice over IP telephony services provided the reliable communications infrastructure necessary for this important event.  The story of this deployment in a very challenging environment is told by Gordon W2TTT.

Search results improvement

The results you will see from a search have changed. By default, search results are now grouped by the type of source page. This means that all results from Forum Topics are grouped together separately from search results from Knowledge Base, How To, News, Announcements and other page types.

Additionally, the source forum is indicated so that you will immediately know if the search result originated in a regional sub-forum or something else, such as hardware, VoIP, deployment or ragchew.

We hope that this improvement makes finding information easier for you.
