HTML Map Contest


Hi AREDN Meshers!

The AREDN Team is looking for a few good men (and ladies)!  The new mapping feature that is in 3.16.1.0 needs your help.
As some of you have seen, we have a good, workable KML map file.  We would like to hold a contest to use that KML to create the best HTML based map that we can host on the www.arednmesh.org website.

CHALLENGE:
To create an HTML embedded map that utilizes the AREDN kml files that can be hosted on www.arednmesh.org.

SKILLS REQUIRED:
Front-end web development: Javascript, CSS, etc.

New Paper on AREDN Published by TAPR

The Proceedings of the 2015 Digital Communications Conference include a paper, The AREDN Project by Andre Hansen, K6AH, which introduces AREDN, describes implementation techniques and concludes with a roadmap for the future.

Abstract

Mesh technology has been around for ten years or more. Over the past two years a team of developers has advanced the art by porting Broadband‐Hamnet’s extremely popular mesh firmware to the Ubiquiti airMAX line of commercial Wireless ISP routers and expanded its utility across a wide range of microwave bands. This has literally changed the complexion of mesh technology from an experimental, hobby‐oriented, novelty into a viable alternative network suitable for restoring some degree of Inter/intra‐net connectivity “when all else fails.”

In the midst of this work the AREDN Project was kicked off to focus development on taking this technology to the next level in EMCOMM communications.

This paper begins with an introduction to the AREDN Project and mesh networking and concludes with a roadmap for the Project’s future. It dives into implementation techniques and aggressive plans to implement across broad portions of the Southwestern US.

​Hamvention 2017 Day 1

What an amazing, delightful and thoroughly exhausting day it has been!

The new location at the Greene County Fairgrounds is great, and while I am sure there will be a number of things that need to be improved for next year, overall this site is a winner for Hamvention. DARA and the hundreds (thousands?) of volunteers who worked to make this event successful are to be commended and thanked for their efforts.

We had a lot of traffic at the booth on Friday. There were many interesting conversations with hams from all over the U.S, Canada and Europe. The mini classes have been well-attended. Even though the classes are short - only 15 to 20 minutes - most people found them useful. They give us the opportunity to have extended talks about specific subjects. We'll post a lot of this information on the website in the near future.

All mini class attendees get a ticket for a door prize drawing. We draw the winning tickets at 3:30 pm and you must be present at our booth to collect a door prize. Yesterday we awarded two prizes to hams whose names and photos will be posted later. The prizes were a Nanostation Loco...

​AREDN in June 2017 QST

AREDN – A High-Speed Data Network by Andre Hansen, K6AH appears in the June 2017 edition of QST.  The article is a thorough discussion of a high-speed multimedia network for public service applications.

Andre describes the features and functions of this innovative open-source effort. The AREDN project repurposes commercial microwave hardware for use on amateur radio bands. He provides an overview of the steps necessary in designing, building and operating an RF network which is focused on supporting emergency response agencies.

A large-scale deployment already covers much of Southern California. A multi-tiered AREDN network in San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and Los Angeles counties covers more than 16,000 square miles and has the potential to serve over 18 million people.

Hamvention 2017 Mesh Network Forum

Hams around the world are now building radio-based high speed digital mesh networks across their cities using microwave technologies and low cost commercial hardware adapted for Amateur Radio use.  Mesh provides flexible, high speed wireless communications that can be adapted to varying terrain types, can be rapidly deployed, are fun to build and use, and are particularly well suited to the EmComm needs of many served agencies.

​Hamvention 2017


The AREDN Project and the Miami Valley Mesh Alliance will have a large presence at Hamvention 2017. We will be in booth 1001 in Building 1 at the Greene County Fairgrounds near Xenia, Ohio. The dates are May 19, 20 and 21, 2017.

We are planning to conduct several demonstrations and answer all your questions about how mesh networking can aid your local emergency response agencies. In the AREDN Forum under General Discussion we have a thread to collect your suggestions for what you would like to see demonstrated.

In Forum room 2 on Saturday, May 20th, from 1:30 to 2:30, Andre, K6AH, will deliver a brief intro to AREDN mesh networking and discuss a simple, yet successful implementation technique that has been used to provide coverage throughout 5 counties---over 16,000 square miles---of Southern California; standing ready to serve the disaster services needs of over 18 million people.  The deployed ham in this scenario delivers these services with an investment in gear, over and above an existing VHF go-kit, of well under $100.

West Central Florida TechCon 2017

 

The AREDN team will be present at the 3rd annual West Central Florida TechCon in Sarasota, FL on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Randy Smith, WU2S will present an overview of AREDN mesh networking at 11:00 am in the Sarasota County Red Cross headquarters building. Randy will describe how a high-speed data can support your emergency communications. He will cover how to plan a network, what equipment to buy, how to get setup and why you should consider putting AREDN at the center of emergency prepAREDNess.
