Major Features

Updated to OpenWRT 25.12.5

OpenWRT 25.12 brings a new package manager - apk. If you are currently using side-loaded .ipk packages, these cannotbe updated when AREDN is updated as they are no longer compatible and will be removed.

Faster network changes

You can now add, remove, or update tunnels without restarting the entire network stack. It’s a lot faster and less disruptive.

Improved HaLow 802.11ah support

Updated to the latest Morse Micro 1.17.9 drivers which improves stability and performance of Halow links.

Support for MediaTek WiFi-6 AX devices

Improved support for AX radio based devices. Note that these radios come with a number of limitations, including only supporting 20 MHz or greater bandwidth.

Zyxel radios

Zyxel is a new manufacturer to AREDN. We support the NWA55AXE. It is the only outdoor rated AX radio supported by OpenWRT, and has connectorized antennas so can be attached to your antenna of choice.

Introducing an AREDN Chat client

Meshchat has been the go-to chat client for most users of AREDN networks. But because AREDN is a communications network software, and the core team has been reluctant to move into apps, support of Meshchat has been hit-and miss.

So the AREDN team has decided to step up to the plate with an AREDN-supported chat client, called Raven. It has a nice set of features:

  • Realtime text messaging.

  • Runs on any AREDN-supported hardware that's running current AREDN software (but see recommendations in the wiki).

  • Can communicate with other Raven clients via AREDN.

  • Can communicate between AREDN meshes via Supernodes

  • Supports talking on a Meshtastic network (requires additional hardware)

  • Supports talking on a Meshcore network (required additional hardware, and integration is very involved. Documentation will eventually be provided).

  • Supports multiple channels per node.

  • Supports sharing images.

  • Supports sharing Winlink forms.

AREDN production release 4.26.1.0 is now available


This release is the first AREDN production release that omits the legacy OLSR protocol, and consequently the first release with the major number 4. That may sound scary, but if all your local nodes are on 3.25.5.0 or greater, they already speak Babel. That means a migration to this production release should pretty much be a non-event for your network.
If you are upgrading to 4.26.1.0 from a babel nightly build, you may see the following message:

BEWARE: Downgrading firmware WILL result in a broken or incomplete node configuration.
This can be safely ignored during this upgrade.

AREDN Release 3.25.10.0 with 802.11ah Support


The AREDN Dev team has released version 3.25.10.0 of the AREDN software,
This is a maintenance release primarily designed to stabilize the current OLSR+Babel network before the switch to a Babel only system next year.
