Too Far...?

Hi Frank,

I just looked at the path more carefully, and at 34 miles, I think it might be tough.  Longer backhauls have been done, but I think mostly unobstructed mountaintop to mountaintop.  Maybe we can find someone to host a note on a tall building in downtown SJ..

I would suggest that loading

I would suggest that loading this into RadioMobile is your best bet to analyze the path.

That said going to an Omni running a bullet your going to be at a loss to begin with.

Distance of course poses an issue but it isn’t the biggest issue, it’s going to be any thermal layers and any other obstructions to the fresnel zones and then noise from so many devices coming in on a single chain device.

That said at 34 miles it might be time to put a dedicated backhaul in between the two sites and then feed out from there from east and west.

A tall building is certainly a plus in that regard in the middle.

Hi Conrad,

Hi Conrad,

No question that a directional antenna will go considerably further if you have a path to something. I am trying to reach any ham in Morgan Hill, San Martin or possibly Gilroy who is not blocked by a major obstruction, similar to the way Joe started the Santiago site. I tunnel back to Socal so there would be interesting things to make it worthwhile.

Hi Dave,

Hi Dave,

I do not believe that I have a direct path to San Jose. I do have additional gear however if someone were to offer me a hilltop site that is in range of my home qth.

At the very least, that would make it easier for others who might want to give AREDN Mesh a try.

Local meeting last night

Frank,
The local San Benito County ham group had a meeting last night and I presented on AREDN. We got a lot of interested folks and there is already talk of some of the guys wanting to put nodes up at their homes here in Hollister. A couple of the guys are in the Gilroy and Morgan Hill area and have access to repeated sites on both sides of the valley. Wanted to get in touch with you to see about coordinating one of those locations to cover your area and connect back to Hollister.

I'm on the other side of both

I'm on the other side of both roads (diagonally, catty-cornered) of your #5 point.

I'm just getting started though. No long distance equipment, at least not that ready for use. (a 5ghz LDF5 and no dish!)
