Updating firmware
"I've been trying to update my Ubiquiti Nanostation M5 with the latest firmware and must have missed a step since the tftp tranfer did not take place. Tried opening the node with "localnode.local.mesh" but it wasn't recognized. Tried to reset the node to factory setting 192.168.1.20 and install a factory firmware download but when I pinged it after the rest attempt, I get a "transmit failed" returned. So with the node apparently bricked,  how do I proceed to first reset the node, which if successful, should let me install the factory download "aredn-3.21.4.0-ar71xx-ubnt-loco-m-xw-factory.bin". Would appreciate help from anyone familiar.
Thanks and 73.

"factory" is only for TFTP
"factory" is only for TFTP installs
"sysupgrade" is used when the node already has AREDN on it.

Have you checked out the docs section of the site?   It's pretty good.

Good luck!

Updating AREDN firmware

Updating AREDN firmware
can be performed 'over the air' or by direct connect from a LAN connected computer.
The name of the firmware used to update ends in 'sysupgrade.bin'.
Instructions for upgrading are on this web site.

I do not know what you did when you 'Tried to reset the node to factory setting'.
AREDN firmware

"So with the node apparently bricked,  how do I proceed to first reset the node,"

I doubt that the node is 'bricked'.
It may be in some misconfigured state.
Please try the 'failsafe' reset first:
Appendix
Failsafe Mode

Failsafe Mode is a method of restoring a node to an operational state.
Reset Password or DHCP:
After the node fully boots press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds which will cause the unit to enable DHCP and reset the root password to 'hsmm'.
Full Failsafe:
After the node fully boots press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds which will cause the unit to behave as if it had just been flashed with the AREDN™ firmware.
You would need to go through the node settings again just as if it was the first time installing the AREDN™ firmware on the node.
I am not sure what 'state' the node is in.
Easy/simple would be to put the device in 'TFTP' state and then install the '...factory.bin' firmware.

I hope this helps,
Chuck

That firmware probably isn't correct for Nanostation M5
This is the correct firmware for a system upgrade of the NanoStation M5 (XW).

Do you  have an NanoStation Loco M5 XW instead?
Was it made before or after 2017? There are actually two different firmware versions:
Read the table carefully: http://downloads.arednmesh.org/firmware/html/stable.html
Make sure of your model. The loco firmware will not load into a NanoStation.
