Is the "sysupgrade" command deprecated?
I was trying to upgrade a TPLink CPE510 from 3.20-something to 4.26.7.

For some reason, I could not get root on the web interface but I could get root via ssh. I uploaded the factory bin file to tmp and ran the command:

sysupgrade -n /tmp/aredn-4.26.7.0-ath79-generic-tplink_cpe510-v3-squashfs-factory.bin

This failed:

Sat Mar 29 13:13:22 UTC 2025 upgrade: Image metadata not present
Sat Mar 29 13:13:22 UTC 2025 upgrade: Use sysupgrade -F to override this check when downgrading or flashing to vendor firmware
Image check failed.

After I reran the command with -F I now have a soft-bricked CPE510. (Fairly sure I can recover the device with TFTP)

Is sysupgrade supposed to work across major versions like this or should we not use it anymore?
