Raspberry Pi 4!!!
With the Raspberry Pi 4, a whole lots of new possibilities comes to us!

New features includes dual-band Wi-Fi, dual mini HDMI, up to 4GB of memory, USB3...

More details: https://uk.farnell.com/buy-raspberry-pi

Even if the 3B+ is more than enough for much deployment I do (ALS, APRS, Dump1090, SDR...), this Pi 4 will soon replace my mobile APRS/Command station 3B+. It may also become the head of my next project, a wall-mounted monitoring display (or now maybe dual-display) that will display a load of information like the weather, systems status, road conditions, propagation...

What kind of ideas do you have to use this new device ?

Not getting any responses i will contribute. I would like to see more done with the raspberry pi in general. Withe the upgraded ram it would possibly make for a tunnel server. I know you can install openwrt on the pi which may not mean a lot but it appears if a device dies not support openwrt it won't support aredn. I don't know if the pi is ideal for aredn or not?

Pi's are ideal for AREDN as LAN connected devices!  They are fantastic!

I imagine so. I just 3b+ to tinker with my little indoor mesh setup. With the upgraded ram (up to 4 gig) how would they Fair as a tunnel server?

RPIs on mesh network
We put an RPI at every site by default now.  Not every site is identical but the RPI provides a web page showing variously:
  • Screenshot(s) of webcam(s) at the site, updated every 5 minutes
  • Inside and outside temp, either via USB TemperSensors or via 1wire devices
  • Backup battery voltages
  • A/C power status present/absent (measuring voltage of a wall wart plugged into the site AC power)
  • At such time as we start deploying weather stations, we'll display their output on a web page, using the open source software package WEEWX (recommended!)

Orv, this really should be the gold standard.
Orv,
Having a Pi at every station (providing your emergency power is robust enough) with these services that you list should be the gold standard. I would love to do this at our nodes. It would help us troubleshoot most issues in our network.

Make a standard image
Orv, I encourage you to build a standard image that others can burn to an SD card, this can be added to over time with other useful tools for monitoring and managing their networks.

Was looking at weewx as it looks like there is some aprs integration? Is there an all in one system or weather station that is easier than other to tinker with?

@w6bi,
@w6bi,

I do have rPi by default in the setup too for RPT linking, APRS and some other RF data collection...

I am looking to monitor AC power & Batt backup (non-APC UPS setup)... can you post more details on your setup ? Like what you use as software and hardware. I am a bit stuck without GPIO because of the TNC connected to it... but I am considering running a Pi Zero just for power monitoring...

Standard image
I hadn't considered that, Andre, but I will.   Where could it be stored and updated?

I'll talk it over with the team.  Perhaps we could manage it's builds in github.

More on builds
OK.  I'll put this on my (increasingly-long) mesh network to-do list :-)   I'll base it on Raspbian Buster, as it's the latest & greatest and I have to do a clean install on it anyway.

A couple ideas on a std MeshPi build

Great idea, hope this helps: If you're going to put together a standardized "build", I'd suggest adding in a few basic utility packages so that folks wouldn't have to struggle with WAN access to install if/once on-site:
xrdp
pv
ipcalc
mc
minicom
nmap
arp-scan
rsync
curl
hexchat
ntfs-3g
samba samba-common-bin
- and I always still use Apache, PHP5, and MariaDB for PI3s but others sometimes prefer lighter weight packages ...

Also, I'd suggest add the following lines (with additional comments) to  /boot/config.txt:

## force HDMI always enabled at boot
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_drive=2

## To enable onboard WiFi and/or BT from the firmware comment out below
## else left turned off to save power, heat, and stray RF
dtoverlay=pi3-disable-wifi
dtoverlay=pi3-disable-bt

BTW: nagios3 (old version) runs really well on Jesse and burns little resources to provide nice network monitoring. Hvaen't installed it on Stretch or Buster yet. However, it does require some thought, underdtanding, and planning to make it work.

Orv, you should check out pi
Orv, you should check out pi-gen.  It's a tool that is used to generate pi images.  We could check-in the source to a github repo and automatically build the images (similar to how we do nightly builds).

Pi-gen
Darryl, Andre mentioned that.  I'll check it out.

The major improvement from my
The major improvement from my perspective is more in throughput. The old architecture had both the disk and network off of the USB2 bus which meant you could get around 100mb throughput total. The new architecture upgrades the hole thing so you get real gig network performance and solid disk performance at teh same time.

Here's an article with good benchmarks: https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/raspberry-pi-4-specs-benchmarks/

I did read that the Pi 4 has issues with it's USB-C connection, though. I may actually hold off till the next revision because of this. Here's a link to a discussion on the topic. https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/c6rk9h/raspberry_pi_doesnt_work_with_active_usb_typec/

I wonder if anyone has experimented around with the WiFi chip on it. It has a CYW43455 for 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz WiFi. I know on some Pis people were able to use the WiFi chip as an SDR for 2.4 ghz

Pardon me raising an old thread from the dead, but I have a Citadel email server and NextCloud file server running on Raspberry Pi 4s. I have  an old Raspberry Pi2 running MeshChat. I have a couple more that I'm going to use for some project or another. Maybe a portable TeamTalk server. Right now I have an 8GB and a 4GB version waiting for a purpose in life.
