I have an old PicoStation2 with stock firmware XS2.ar2316.v4.0.3.5058.130328.1054 on it. I'm guessing this won't work with AREDN firmware?

So in a nut shell only 'M' series / HP radios are supported.

basically yes. the "M" series have more processing power, more storage, and more memory.
