I don't feel it would be practical to put up several directional antennas to encompass the area for receiving aredn signals  but putting up a directional dish pointing to a aredn mesh located in another city to foward traffic from my area would

does anyone know if these omni directional mikrotik units would work for the purpose of receiving signals

https://mikrotik.com/product/RBMetalG-52SHPacn#fndtn-specifications

https://mikrotik.com/product/RBGroove52HPnr2

they both appear to be routeros systems so i am not sure if they are usable.

On a separate note has anyone tried using any of the cheap chinese clones to tp link or the mikrotik hardware?

Hi, Stephen:

Are there sufficient AREDN stations in your neighborhood to indicate omnidirectional coverage is practical?
I see perhaps 1 AREDN station within 7 miles, 1 at 0.5 miles, kg6mdw.
How big is your 'AREDN neighborhood' from the bottom of your hill?

There is a hilltop AREDN switch West of your location that might work as a link.

Honestly i am not sure how
Honestly i am not sure how many aredn nodes are in the neighborhood. I do know there is one person about 4 blocks south of me that has a dish on his roof but not sure where it is pointing to. It seems to be pointing nw so??

95 percent of AREDN
95 percent of AREDN connections are directional.  An Omni is a good choice to provide signal to a dense cluster of areas within a mile of the antenna, but it does not improve receive at all.  So not your best choice unless you want to be able to use AREDN close in to your house.  Better to make friends with the hams in your local area who already do AREDN and ask they visit with a typical antenna, then do a 360 deg signal survey from your location.  This will identify which nodes you have any chance of hitting, and then you have information what devices are necessary to make those connections.  I do this a lot in my region, and we save folks wasting time and money.  This is more art than science, gather data rather than overthink it.
