Is it possible to have a Linksys OpenWRT on DtD be a neigbbor?

As AREDN is a version of OpenWRT, was wondering if it is possible (or desirable!) to connect a Linksys WRT54G flashed as a OpenWRT router be a neighbor via a DtD connection?  I changed two ports on an OpenWRT router to be VLAN2 and be DtD, and connected it to my AREDN DtD network (I have my nodes daisy changed together (each node having a pair of DtD ports) in the middle of this chain.  I can see all my nodes from any node so it looks like the DtD traffic is getting thru the OpenWRT, but the OpenWRT does not show as a new neighbor.  I suppose that the OpenWRT won't show up as it is not a "mesh node", but just a router.  Would be nice if it did, I have an RS232 port installed on the OpenWRT router.  Probably a reason to not allow this is that ham traffic could get into ordinary wifi and visa versa.

Or is it possible to install an RS232 port on one of my WRT54G hsmm nodes?  I'd have to figure out if the ser2net program used in the OpenWRT router would work, and where and how to install it.

As it is probably quite obvious, I'm not a software guy  smiley mainly a hardware guy.

Sounds more like you want to
Sounds more like you want to just plug it in as a client device (mesh node LAN port) and just use it as an advertised service.

BTW: I've seen some pretty cheap IP to RS232 on ebay lately (10$) havent ordered one yet but they read as if they would work well.

If you are trying to provide
If you are trying to provide general wifi client access to the mesh....
use an AirGateway connected to the LAN of a node
or
use a Linksys box (or better) with DD-WRT or OpenWRT (stock) and connect to the LAN of a node.

Your phones, pc, etc would connect to DD-WRT.  It's WAN is connected to the LAN of the node to acces
s all of the mesh.

DtD on Linksys
Due to some rare hardware issues, DtD on Linksys is disabled by default.   If you search broadbandhamnet.org you can find the tweak to re-enable it.
