ICOM has announced its SHF Band Challenge to produce radio communications products for the 2.4 Ghz and 5 GHz Amateur Radio bands.
I'm sure that this will be a gateway path to commercial products down the road.
By starting in the Amateur Radio market, they seem to be focused on the development of products for the ad-hoc and tactical environments. With this type of product experience and exposure, they could easily evolve to enhance their public safety, LMR and marine radio businesses with practical, yet robust broadband networking solutions.
Time will tell what comes our way, but they wouldn't be the first company to use the Amateur Radio community as a product development playground.

I've reached out to them already regarding the released info about using UTP. I hope they reconsider and switch to coax. Having supported microwave for many years, the UTP based systems are limited compared to what coax IF systems can deliver.
