Nanostation M2 firmware not updating
Hello

New guy question here.

I have a Nanostation M2 that I purchased.  I followed the directions to change the firmware, but nothing worked.

Here is what I have tried:
Original Firmware XW-5.6.12
Tried to downgrade it to XW-5.5.10
got message "wrong firmware version"
Tried to update to XW-5.6.15 - Success
Tried again to downgrade to XW-5.5.10 - "Wrong Firmware version"

I viewed a few posts on the forums here where people had similar issues and they seem to have them solved, but when I tried to copy those instructions, still no success.
I looked on UBNT.com website for the 5.5 firmware and they no longer seem to list it, even in their past firmware history for the devices.

Am I missing something?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

Please always review the

Please always review the supported hardware matrix, we do not currently support XW 2 GHz devices.

Please see the following (very recently created, only within the past week) ticket requesting we add support for NSM2 XW [LINK REMOVED]

All discussion should take place on the ticket to move this forward.

Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the info.  Unfortunately when I ordered it, there was nothing stating what the firmware version was, so I had only the model number to go on.  I have found that ticket and seem to be making progress on it.

Thanks and 73s

Where to get XM versions?
I just bought 3 NS M2s with no way of knowing what version they were. I now have three useless NSs that are XW and will have to return them for a refund.

Is ordering NSs always going to be a crap shoot? How in the world are we to know that we can get XM versions when we order?

Once an XW version of a

Once an XW version of a hardware is available you should naturally expect all hardware you buy from that point out to be XW. It's a hardware refresh, you wouldn't expect to be able to buy a brand new 2014 model car rolled out of the factory fresh in 2017 you would expect it to be a 2017.

Perhaps reading the ticket you might understand a successful test image has been generated and you could followup with the dev team there to get a copy to help ensure they work flawlessly for the next person.  Hardly sounds like the hardware is "useless".

Reliable source for NanoStations and NS Locos
Anyone have an idea how we can be sure we we'll get XM versions when we order? Is there a vendor we can order from that would know the firmware version? I ordered through Amazon and there was no way to know?

just load the nightly build for Nanostation XW models.  easy.

Easy, eh? How would I have known to do this? Where would I have found this detail? That bit of info is not mentioned on the Supported Platform Matrix. Does this mean that the nightly build will install as an AREDN flash over the UBNT XW firmware? What happens if the flask bricks the hardware? Isn't the nightly build experimental? Is it really that easy. Is this true for the NS Loco as well?

Hi Bob,

Hi Bob,
Well, easy to "fix"... not as easy find the info without some bookmarks (we are working on that)

[LINKS REMOVED]

With these nightly builds: (no AirOS downgrade required)
You can load the AREDN nanostation xw "factory" firmware directly over AirOs 6.0.4 and below via the AirOS GUI.
You can load the AREDN nanostation xw "factory" firmware directly over any version of AirOS via the TFTP procedure.

If the flash does work properly for some reason, a TFTP load will usually work to recover it. (99% of the time)
However, with nightly builds be prepared to do TFTP and possibly use a serial console (attached to the circuit board) to do a serial recovery. (rare)

FYI: The nightly builds DO NOT WORK for the Bullet and PowerBeam 620 devices yet, IF YOU SKIP THE AIROS DOWNGRADE STEP.  We are working on the fixes for those now.  If you have a Bullet and PB620 AND want to use nighly, you must downgrade AirOS to 5.x FIRST (as you have been).

Thanks for the detailed info.
Thanks for the detailed info. It is appreciated.

Since these are brand new I'm hesitant to do anything with them and will return them for a refund and see if I can find some XM version NanoStations.

Please help & thanks
Pretty frustrated and not getting anywhere.
Loco M2 XW.

I can downgrade to 5.6 but not to 5.5 and the nightly build will not install "untrusted firmware"
Can find anything "unsigned" that will load onto the device.
Followed the instructions:

And tried the firmware that is linked in order.

Is there a way I can do this?
I don't care if it "unsupported"

Thanks!!

I finally got it to go.
I finally got it to go.
Had to flash it from 5.6

I did not have any luck flashing from 6.04 like the instructions mentioned with the nightly builds.
Kept beating my head against the wall trying and trying to downgrade to 5.5 and trying "unsigned" versions of 6
that would not allow me to flash the nightly build.

I'm up & running now.

Firmware #2 in the list of "Past Firmware" is: airOS5 for XM board firmware v5.6.15 (unsigned)

Load that.

Thanks.
Thanks.
I think that's exactly what I did when I was finally able to upload the nightly build.

I was hung up on thinking it had to be flashed with 5.5 unsigned as well as other version that would not flash when it had 5.6 on it earlier.
Anyhow good to go now.

since you applied AirOs 6.0.3

since you applied AirOs 6.0.3, that has a "signed" bootloader and will only load Ubiquiti firmware.  You need to look on UBNT downloads site and find an "UNSIGNED" firmware (which will load any firmware) and load it.  Then, start the AirOs downgrade.

Alternatively, you can load the AREDN nightly build on any version AirOS, as long as you load via the TFTP method.

I purchased a Nanostation M2
I purchased a Nanostation M2 from amazon which turned out to be a XW version and I was unable to downgraded. I called Flytec and they told me that they not longer has XM versions in stock and that they are an older unit.
I think we are in a pickle until AREDN can come up with a fix for the XW versions.

w3ex,  Is this a NS M2 "loco"
w3ex,  Is this a NS M2 "loco" XW?     If this is the bigger size NS M2 and it is an XW, then this may be the first heard of hitting the street.    There is a path from A to B regardless, but let's confirm specifics.

It's the NanoStation M2 XW version. I returned it to Amazon for a refund.

daily build worked perfectly on new XW M2
Thanks for the thread and all the great work that the AREDN team is doing.  A friend had a new M2 W version, got 'wrong version' and in frustration, sent it to me..  Working now, thanks to finding this thread..thanks!!   73 de AG6IF

XW Nano m5 not taking 6.04 unsigned

Hi,
I thought I had this down.
I ran into a 6.1.6 XW new nanostation m5 which didn't take the nightly build directly, (error 43), so i attempted to downgrade to 6.04 unsigned per the instructions earlier here, and it wont take 6.04 either (6.0.3 unsigned either).  same error, errror 43

Is there a new trick?   I would rather stay in the gui but know how to TFTP also.
thanks everyone!  73 de AG6IF

fast forward 30 minutes...answered my own question..posting so that it might help someone.

I sent AirOS unsigned 6.04 to the M5 using TFTP method which worked fine, then landed the XW nightly build right on top...up and running now...

The newer versions of AirOS
The newer versions of AirOS UI expect signed firmware and only accepts a limited AirOS version downgrade.  The tftp process does not expect signed firmware.     'tftp' the nightly build directly to this device does the trick.    Use the nano-m-xw  factory firmware.

thanks Joe, your instructions would have saved me a step..I put 6.04 on first, then AREDN...thanks !!
