AirGateway

Do not let the picture fool you (see link below), this is a genuine Ubiquiti Networks Airgateway Indoor AP for under $20 delivered. Ordered on Friday and had it in my hands by Sunday afternoon.

AirGateway

The AirGateway is used inline at the PoE injector to create a wireless connection to the AREDN flashed device. I am using it to connect to my NanoBridge M5 with my smartphone via WiFi directly. This way I do not always have to drag out the laptop to the field or tower or in this case my back patio.

What settings for AirGateway as a Access Pts. to my AREDN Mesh?

Hi Douglas,
I'm a newbie to AREDN Mesh and wifi connections so this is probably a very basic question for you. I have successfully set up both a NetGear N600 and a Ubiquiti AirRouter as Access Points to get onto my AREDN Mesh network via wifi. Over the weekend I tried setting up my first AirGateway and I'm stumped. On the others I just had to put them in Acces Point mode and disable LAN DHCP and then connect LAN port of the POE to a LAN port of the respective router and they worked. But on the AirGateway there is no Access Point designation, there is Router, Bridge and SOHO I think so I just left it on SOHO. I disabled LAN DHCP. Also changed SSID and the passwords. The AG shows up on wifi and I can connect to it but it gives me an IP starting with 169.... (I think). and I can't get on to the Mesh network.

I'm probably missing something extraordinarily basic. Could you help me out?

Thanks- Gordon KD8TXW

I set it to "Bridge" and it works.
I set the AirGateway to Bridge mode and it works as an Access which provides no IP addresses. The IP addresses come from the Mesh Node which is what I want.  In Bridge mode there isn't a DHCP setting which makes it even easier to use.

I think using the AirGateway as an Access Point is a good way to go. They are only $20 to $23  and very easy to set up. And if you want to use them with a 12V battery they work fine. Just use it with a POE injector and connect to the male connector on the AirGateway.

Thanks for the tip
Thanks for the tip about using the AitGateway with a 12V battery. https://www.aredn.org/content/how-connect-portable-mesh-node-airgateway-android
I will have to give that a try.

AirGateway and VLAN1 - WAN
Does it seem feasible to use the AirGateway's "LAN" port as a WAN to connect to a home router?   ....anybody tried it?  I have a couple to fiddle with and just wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

AirGateway and WAN from a Bullet
Hi K5DLQ,
I realize I didn't express my question fully.  Is it feasible to connect  a Bullet M2 to the Airgateway and access the Bullet's WAN port.  Thus using the AirGateway to enable WAN/Gateway on the bullet to a home router without using another VLAN capable switch/router.   If so can you assist me with the setting?
Thanks for any advice,

oh gotcha.  I understand now.
oh gotcha.  I understand now.
I've never tried that.  I could envision it being possible if you tag the both ports on the airgateway as VLAN1 (LAN tagged, "WAN" untagged).

Don, KE6BXT, has a go-kit
Don, KE6BXT, has a go-kit with 2 pico-stations.  Think of a plastic light weigh tool box with 2 antennas that stick out of hte case.   The 2 antennas are threaded and screwed through the case to the pico-station.   Also the power cord comes out.   Inside the case is  an AREDN airRotuer.    One pico-station (these could be the airGateways too) is configured as a wifi hotspot bridged to the mesh.  The other pico is on the WAN port of the airRouter and is configured as an AP-Client in bridge mode.   It then can connect to a local Wifi hotspot and enables the AirRouter to be an internet gateway.      The AP-Client is configured to connect to a Verizon hotspot.

We are using AirOS on these devices.  I don't recall if AirOS lets you configure to pull out the vlan 1  for the WAN interface and won't need an additional smart switch.

Thanks for the reply Joe,
Thanks for the reply Joe,
That's kind of what I'm trying but 1 step simpler.  I'm trying to see if I can make a "real simple" Go Kit with only one AREDN device (an NSM2 in this case) for the Mesh and an AirGateway  with WLAN0 grabbing a hotspot WiF then serve as a Gateway to WAN  -- and then even offer the other LAN port -- as AREDN LAN.  I have setup one of Trevor's(K7FPVkits exactly as he has it spec'd with 1AirRouter, 1 AirGateway, and 1 TPLINK AP. http://www.trevorsbench.com/portable-internet-mesh-node/  This setup works great!  Now I'm  trying to see if can make it one step simpler and eliminate the AirRouter from the mix.

...again, advice welcome.

Configuration of AirGateway WiFi??

I'm very interested in this subject. We're up and running in Sarasota, FL with a number of nodes, and have switches, computers, IP phones etc running. I've just picked up this little AirGateway. My understanding is this gives us back a WiFi spot (as the radio got consumed with the mesh).

The AirGateway, wakes up in the 192.1681.x space. Do you leave it there. Or do you move it to the same 10.x.x.x space as the mesh.

Do you plug this in, behind the injector and then plug the switch (GS105E) into that, with the IP phone, computer. Then with the Wifi, you can do IP phone from an iPhone too??

Or does this have to be on a separate mesh node??

Trying to understand where and how to place and configure this little guy.

Configuring AirGateway
I usually put the AirGateway into 'bridge' mode.  This means when the client wifi device connects to this airGateway AP, it acts like a cat5 cable between the device and the Mesh node (on its LAN).    Your device receives a 10.x.x.x address from the mesh node (may need to go from 5 to 13 count in setup if a lot of deices are in use at the same time).

Yes, the Gateway plugs into the injector, then treat it like a standard POE brick to plug  LAN ports together with the AirRouter or your netgear port (configured as a LAN port with a mesh node connected on another port ).

I usually avoid the AirGateway using 192.168.x.x addresses similar to most home wifi setup with 1 internet facing addressed (in our case with the AirGateway using only 1 x 10.x.x.x address on the mesh).    VOIP and some other applications need further and special firewall rule handling (more complication and know-how) to work correctly though this IP masquerading setup.

Bridge mode makes sense

Thanks joe.   Bridge mode makes a lot of sense as does having the same ip range as the node. Yep all my nodes are 13 addresses already. First test will be to set this up and connect a laptop back to the mesh via WiFi.  Then when I know it's working I'll mess with soft phones on smartphones.

Thanks for the direction

airGateway/POE injector incompatibiity!

I just got one of these. Haven't configured it yet so this thread was very interesting. I noticed though, that it's not compatible with all of the POE injectors.

I have three (3) different types. I have the 0.5 amp 'skinny' variety I got with a pair of NanoBridges, a 'fat' 1 amp one with a Bullet Titanium (there's no mating ring on this one), and another 'fat' 1 amp version of a different configuration with my Rocket XW (a mating ring exists but the airGateway can't connect correctly). Then there's another 'skinny' 0.5 amp version with the AirRouter.

For the 'fat' versions, the airGateway can't plug into the POE port as it would have to go in upside down. It mates, but won't work that way. It does seem to mate up correctly with the 'skinny' 0.5 amp POE injectors. All of these are from Ubiquiti BTW.

I haven't seen any AREDN firmware for it so I presume I'd just use AirOS and configure it to an IP on the AREDN node. Is that correct?
