Were do you propose setting up a node? The mesh bridges Berkeley Oakland Alameda and sf.

Depending where you are we can point you in to one of the site's.
I'm in somewhat of the same boat, but wondering if there is anything in the south bay area, maybe on Loma Prieta. Would have expected more infrastructure in the bay area as a whole
KJ6DZB, not sure if my email made it but I emailed you the other day to see if you know of any nodes being setup in San Jose or further south.
If your viewing the map on in chrome there is a tab to show a key.
There has been lots of interest expressed, but it's going to take a group effort to install some good sites to link bayarea naborhoods. As our group has learned the urban environment is unforgiving, when it comes to trees, buildings and hills obstructing views. Ive advocated that hams interested. We need to target some the baynet or laloma ridge repeater sites for hubs.
I would like to share the experiences we have had here, in a hope to expand into all corners of the bay.
The key is in the bay off Berkeley... I will try to add a little more info. Tomorrow. I'm trying to track the node site's and link quality between sites on the map, we have a few sites in the works those are represented in black. We plan to have a 5ghz link pointing south from Evens hall at ucb by years end. The site on the use hornet has great coverage, but we would need to install more equipment to get a link down South, the nodes are pointed at sf and north Oakland Berkeley. We are looking for sites in to Oakland to bounce 2.3ghz signals off the Hornet, and or Evens hall when we add 5ghz in Oakland. Although the 5ghz link on campous is intended to reach Stanford.
No problem, got the email address off one of your websites. I can be emailed at chris at dunns dot net. I'm in the Gilroy/Hollister area and been trying to drum up interest with no takers so far. I'm in the process of procuring hardware and at this point will have to tunnel with someone. Once I have it setup that might get the locals interested.
Chris, Its taken 3+ years to get this chunk up. Its great that we have this forum to communicate and network on! Do you have a LOS of the Loma Prieta ridge? We could lobby the club http://lprc.net/ to get a hub up on the ridge.
I run a tunnel client here that's connected to a ham back east. I can provide his info to you. Im currently waiting on my ISP to install fiber at my qth, then I will have the upstream bandwidth to host a Tunnel server.
Yeah, I have LOS to Loma Prieta. The tower lights are clear at night :) Ideally it would be great to have a node on Loma Prieta serving San Jose and then have a node on Fremont Peak to cover San Benito and Monterey Counties. Fremont Peak could like to a node Loma Prieta. Then just need to tie into the Central Valley mesh. The So-Cal backbone is being extended to Paso Robles now and I have an email into gentleman that is working on that. The backbone is getting close to the bay area now, just need the south valley infrastructure built up to assist in it.
I will try to check into the loma prieta net I will swing my 2m yagi around and lesion in.
Chris your closer to Fremont peak... when the time comes a pair of NanoBridge M5 one at our place and one at Fremont peak, then go local on 5ghz or 2.3ghz. We had a lot of trouble with 2.4ghz before the firmware supported ch-1 and -2. If I had the chance to start fresh I would invest in 5ghz NanoStations.
What are others findinf to be an achievable link distance with the NanoBridge M3 for back bone links running AirOS?
Im going to ping the UC Santa Cruz ARC to see if they have any interest in helping.
I've emailed someone at the Fremont Peak Repeater Asst.with no response. That peak would be a great one to cover two counties and be part of the backbone.
KK6RUH,
Can you see the USS hornet from your QTH? I so we have had problems with Noise on 2.3ghz, and 1 ship is inthe way for a good link to Berkeley. Im thinking another 5ghz node. do you have equipment or looking to start off? Here is the view from the site.
We have a mesh forming in the Livermore area with the Livermore Amateur Radio Club (LARK). We're on 2.4 GHz Ch. -2. Once we get something up on Sunol ridge just to the west of Pleasanton, the hope will be that we can link into your area.
Hi everyone, need some pointers of how to deploy AREDN nodes in the North Oakland Temescal area. Mostly what nodes to buy and where to point them. If I can figure it out, I can try to propose installing them throughout the city of Oakland (given my case study proves to attach itself to the baynet mesh.) Any thoughts are welcome. At the least, I'll have some spot for a node or two.
NoiseBridge is a bit of a stretch for me at the moment. would be able to stop by rarely if i had to. SR @ Omni Commons is a possible spot. most likely UPS if no room for solar on the roof. another idea would be equipping the Oakland EOC and maybe some anchor with a node. SR requires me to check in with them first, but sunday afternoons are open office hours for their mesh network. i have plenty of crazy ideas that i doubt will work but possibly could.
also, what band are we using for Radio access and any plans for backhaul?
i think i sent you an email a couple weeks back if the info i provided there helps
Update, lots of mystery equipment, no access to investigate
I would be happy to meet up with you at the sudo room on a Tuesday or a Sunday.it turns out that the city of Oakland purchased Ubiquiti nodes for all the fire stations and EOC A while back, but no one is quite sure the model and spectrum because nobody has access to the EOC where there is equipment, but just still in its box and only accessible when the EOC is open, which almost never happens without getting an OK from the fire chief. Lots of opportunity here in Oakland, just have to get through the red tape. Ideally, we need to assemble a node deployment crew to demonstrate to the fire department that we know what we are doing and can be trusted to get on the roof and install as well as maintain the equipment when it gets installed. All fire stations also have internet activity for tunneling if it turns out to act like a bunch of islands. There are some hams at the sudo room who are on the node deployment crew for the People's Open Mesh Network who might be interested in helping deploy a network similar to theirs like AREDN.Im happy to meet up with you in these next upcoming weeks if youre available.

I also just jumped into mesh and obtained a PicoStationM2 from a friend. Not sure if itll help. I live on a hill in Hayward and still debating if i want to put a mesh on the house or have one mobile. Not sure if any of this will help the mesh project in Oakland.
We met at the SFARC I believe. I'm in Oakland near the Hills with a limited view north and better view hight on the hills or south. I'm working with a 5GHz Nanostation and would love to figure out how best to link into the mesh. Especially if I can extend the network a bit south.
I will add your qth to the planning and education map. If you report a location to ARDEN I will see it.too.
Its possible to release a Low Altitude Balloon with a 5ghz Omni Bullet M5, with a 4S,5S,6S Battery pack, with a Dycron tether, to ~400' to gain relay for coverage!
You might want to check out this: http://bit.ly/arednmap
All these are self-reported (and instantly available) via the AREDN 3.16.1.0 firmware.

The legend is in the lower right side, however, the ABSOLUTE BEST way to view the map is in Google Earth (installed on your computer). You can link to http://data.aredn.org/map.kml
You can click each pin to see more details.

Ive updated the the map's key.

The map looks sparse. I'm around 40th/Adeline and I've got line of sight to downtown Oakland.
Could you describe your proposed site with a little more detail. Do you have roof access? Are you looking to buy equipment or do you have any already?
I can provide a Tunnel server to connect too when you can.

No idea what level of interest in connecting to, or awareness of, AREDN network.

solar powered or ups backup?
Would you be able to book a date at NB, and to servery the site?

The map in the previous post shows the site at the USS Hornet. It could be upgraded or adjusted after there is something in the air in SF.

Im working with the ARRL section to organize a regional network.
If you have a node and would like to have a Client connection into a tunnel server , let me know.
