I am interested in using AREDN as part of an overall resilience plan for the 50+ schools in our district (Madison, Wisconsin), over an area of about 75 square miles. A mesh network is ideal, as our facilities are more or less evenly distributed across the city.
Does anyone have recommendations for hardware, network topology, etc. for a project like this? Funding is limited, but we have a lot of high school students who could be taught to solder components to a board and assemble nodes for credit.

There is really no soldering normally involved since the devices we support are manufactured devices intended for consumers or wireless service providers.
That said, building an AREDN network is an excellent way to learn about Internet components and technology, and practical applications of radio communications. The documentation on this website should help you get started. Take a look at the Beginner's Guide section and subsequent charters.
Many hams start with a few inexpensive indoor devices to learn how to setup and use a simple network. This can be done in a lab or classroom, and it provides a lot of useful information about how an Internet protocol network works.
I may be able to help you acquire some devices to get started if you wish to pursue this.
