but I don't quite understand why communication with older versions is no longer possible.
My question is: Am I premature, or is it really true that a connection with older versions is no longer possible?

To return to <= 4.26.7.0 from a >20260706 nightly will require TFTPing a factory.bin .

Somewhere Orv mentioned that there were problems with post 4.26.7.0 nightlies and that the issue was now fixed? Perhaps before going all the way to a first boot you might try again with a more recent nightly and see if that fixes your connection problem.
