DTD connections

Hi There,

I am setting up a test equipment with line of sight with RocktDish AirMax connected to RocketM5. A total of 3 towers.

Tower 1 will have RocktDish AirMax connected to RocketM5 pointing in one direction to the line of sight to the next tower.
Tower 2 will have 2 RocktDish AirMax connected to 2 RocketM5 individually pointing in opposite directions to the line of sight to the previous/next tower.
Tower 3 will have RocktDish AirMax connected to RocketM5 pointing in one direction to the line of sight to the last (2) tower.

Please help me to understand:

a) How do I create a DTD connection on two RocketM5 on towers 2
b)...is there a possibility of connecting two RocktDish AirMax to one RocketM5 on  tower 2 instead of having 2 RocketM5 radios each on tower 2?

You might have already answered this but I could not figure out how to do this.

My apologies and thanks for your help in advance.

DtD connect 2 AREDN devices

a) How do I create a DTD connection on two RocketM5 on towers 2

Connect the 2 LAN ports of the POE injectors with an ethernet patch cable. Cable can be straight or crossover. Doesn't matter as both devices should be MDI/MDIX.

b)...is there a possibility of connecting two RocktDish AirMax to one RocketM5 on tower 2 instead of having 2 RocketM5 radios each on tower 2?

The firmware/protocol is expecting an antenna array pointing in one direction.

I hope this helps, Chuck

DtD connect 2 AREDN devices
Hi Chuck,

As a follow up question to a) How do I create a DTD connection on two RocketM5 on towers 2 and your answer below:

Connect the 2 LAN ports of the POE injectors with an ethernet patch cable. Cable can be straight or crossover. Doesn't matter as both devices should be MDI/MDIX.

Follow up question: the lan card on the radio I suppose supports 10/100 Mbps. Is there a way I can increase the lan connection speed to more than 100 Mbps? The radios are capable of 130 + Mbps the lan cable patching will reduce the speed of the whole network to 100 Mbps I would suppose? Is there a way around this to get it to 130+Mbps? Thanks...I am waiting for your take/input on this Chuck.

Ethernet ports
Ethernet speeds are fixed by the chipset in the unit, so No, the speed cannot increased beyond 10/100.
If gigabit Ethernet speeds are required, consider buying a more recent device such as a Mikrotik Basebox 5 ort QRT 5.

RF LInk speeds
While the radios might be rated higher than 100 Mbps, in practice you won't see it.  So the 100 Mbps Ethernet ports on the equipment isn't a bottleneck.

Hi, Romeo:

Remember that there is more overhead in the radio data than the ethernet LAN connection.
So, the throughput is less.
-and-
The radio circuit is half duplex, while the ethernet LAN is full duplex.

No need to wait for a response from me as there are many smarter folks than me, here. ;-)

I do not want to belabour

I do not want to belabour this topic but one final question. Sorry if I am asking too many questions.

I am looking to see if I can implement Rocket5ac Lite with the ArednMesh firmware same firmware used for Rocket (XW). The only reason I am doing this is that I can use the 1000Mbps DTD lan port connection for connecting the radio devices together on tower 2 and the capabilities of the radios are similar. Please see above. However, I do not see Rocket5ac Lite in the list of approved or tested units. Has anyone experimented with installing the ArdenMesh firmware on Rocket5ac Lite? Any comments would be welcome.

Again thanks everyone for your support and help.

None of the ac devices are
None of the ac devices are available yet (except the hAP lite - and it only uses that capability on part 15 WiFi).
Also, and pointed out earlier, you will not gain anything by have a Gig-E interface.
