What controls what types of hardware can be supported?

What controls what kind of hardware can be supported?

Are there characteristics of the hardware that makes it more or less easy to port the software?

The main controls of what
The main controls of what hardware would be supported is the existence of a way to specifically control the modulation and frequency, ideally giving access to the ham frequencies outside the equipment's intended use in the ISM band. At this time, it means the ATH79 or AR71xx chipsets.

More specifically, the hardware already has to be supported by OpenWrt, which the AREDN software is based upon.

And what hardware is supported by OpenWrt?

fro example the WRT54GS systems support OpenWRT but are not supported by AREDN.

I suspect you'll find that the OpenWrt WRT54GS image is no longer actively updated.  OpenWrt (and by extension AREDN) software has grown over the years, and as OpenWrt stops supporting devices with < 32 MB of RAM, AREDN does also.

If you look at AREDN's Supported Platform Matrix you'll see a number of products listed with a light green background.  They're no longer recommended for new deployments. That's due to them either not being MIMO, or not having enough RAM.
