Android Direct IP dialer
Are there any Android apps that permit direct IP dialing?

Direct Dialing

Grandstream Wave claims to do this in the manual. I cannot try it as I have no Android equipment.
I am hoping it will also work for Iphones, but no luck as yet.

IOS Direct Dialing
I have been discussing this with GS engineers.
They say direct dialing works on both android and ios.
But the IOS manual mentions it and the IOS manual does not.

They say try a different LAN.
I did, and it improves things.
Using my mesh lan, where the iphones connect to a wifi bullet, which is connected to a mesh bullet via a switch, none of the iphones can call one another.  Addresses like 10.  etc.

Using my home wifi lan, provided by an ASUS router, 2 of the phones can call one another.
The other 2 can call the first 2, but not each other. The first 2 cannot call the second 2.
Addresses like 192. etc

Can anyone explain why it works on one LAN and not the other?

Can anyone explain why 2 phones are different from the other 2 phones? They are all Iphone 7. Same OS and Wave versions.
I have gone over and over the settings and cannot find any differences.

Thanks!

Both GS Wave and Linphone do direct IP dialing.
David,
I've used both GS Wave and Linphone to do direct IP dialing to VOIP devices on our network using both Android and iPhone. You can even save the IP dialing address in favorites or speed-dial to call the phone you want as long as it keeps that fixed IP address. As soon as a PBX gets involved direct IP dialing usually goes out the window unless you keep a fixed IP address VOIP architecture - which isn't hard.

Config screen

Thanks Damon. I found the GS Wave app but how do I configure it without a PBX. Would it be possible to provide a screenshot of what I need to do to configure the app or instructions on how to do it? Sorry, I'm a noob to this stuff.

Direct Dialing
Damon - Were you able to make Wave do direct dial with iphone?

Heck yeah - just dial the IP like this 192*168*1*69#5060
For both Bob and David,

To make a direct IP call on both iPhone and Android just do this:
1. Open the GS Wave app
2. Open the dial screen/keypad icon
3. Dial the IP address and port you want with an asterisk replacing the period and a # sign before the port, just like on Grandstream VOIP phones. For example, if the target IP address is 192.168.1.69 and the port is 5060 (i.e., 192.168.1.69:5060), input the following: 192*168*1*69#5060
*(on AREDN your 'plugged in' VOIP phones start with a 10 and are actually more like this 10.42.1.82:5060)
4. Press “Dial” icon to make an audio call

If you're sure you can ping to that IP address, but the call doesn't go through, try port 5062. Sometimes Grandstream assigns 5062 instead of the standard SIP port of 5060. (don't ask how I figured this one out)

For David,
It's way easier to setup your Android phones for direct dialing than it is for a SIP PBX. It's just not as versatile and it's local only. The way I do it is if I don't have a PBX, but I do have several VOIP phones with fixed IP addresses. In AREDN, for example, they always get plugged into the same port on the same hAP-ac-lite or AR750 and get deployed as a pair. My Android phone or tablet will always be connected to the same AREDN device's WiFi access point. I usually use the 5GHz WiFi access point on the MikroTik hAP-ac-lite or the GL-AR750. And I always use the same Android device with that same AREDN node. This means my IP address always stays the same (it has so far anyway). Now using the instructions above, you direct dial the IP address of all of your network's VOIP phones (and even Android/iPhone devices with GS Wave app on them). And each time you dial, make a call, and make sure they work; as soon as  you hang up, you save that dialing sequence as a contact in your GS Wave app. It's that easy.

Account required.
Damon, on neither my android nor my iPhone will your procedure work.  In both cases, the phone advises that it can not call without an account.  Tried it both with and without specifying the port.  After creating a bogus SIP account on the android, I could dial out, but not receive calls.
In both cases, it was a version of GS Wave that were downloaded within the last hour.

I'll have to look into this.
I have both Android and iPhone devices, but it's been over 6 months since I've done any of this - so most of this advice is coming from my notes and my memory. I also have a mixture of iPhones and iPads and Android phones and tablets. Many of them already have SIP and sometimes UCM accounts for other projects/services. I'm pretty dang sure I've done this without an account before. I hope this isn't a new 'feature' of the GS Wave app that we have to find a solution around.

Got it half way
Created a totally bogus SIP account and it let me dial out by IP.  Could not receive a call on the phone by IP however.

I give up
Thanks for the assistance but no joy with this project.

Direct Dialing
I am trying to call from one iphone to another.  Both have the same dummy accounts. The default port number from GS wave is 5004 on both phones.
I dial with the * separators.  It is impossible to add a port number because as soon as the # is entered, it starts dialing the number.
The call does not go thru, it says "no response".  Both iphones are on the same LAN. Help!

Still no luck
I've tried every suggestion made and when I dial it always ends with a fast busy signal. I'm using a Grandstream HT701 ATA. Instructions for the HT701 says for direct IP dial start with prefix *47 + the IP address. There is no SIP configured on the ATA.

So what did you do to make it finally work?

I wish I knew

I wish I knew enough to explain what the fix was. Don Hill has an HT701 which is the same ATA that I have. I just mirrored his settings on my ATA minus the local IP address and it worked. Sorry, I can't provide more info.
