3.20.3.0 fails on Rocket M5 (with USB)
I got some used Rockets in today via Ebay. one was a Rocket M2 and three Rocket M5's (all are the XM versions). I first reset them all to factory and then loaded 3.20.3.0 and all of them loaded fine with the exception of one. The one that failed has a USB port next to the Ethernet port.

So when I say it failed it did seem to load the firmware ok but after it rebooted it never gave the initial 192.168.1.x address. I was able to get it into recovery mode and then could ping 192.168.1.20 and tried to load 3.20.3.0 again with the same results. I then tried 3.19.3.0 and that worked. So I assume something about this XM version with the USB port must have been supported in the last version but something got missed on the latest version perhaps?

Any thoughts?

In the 3.19.3.0 images many
In the 3.19.3.0 images many models were supported by the ar71xx targets, which packed in drivers for everything.  going to the new approach by openwrt, they are working to generate an image per device-model with the new ath79 target upgrading to newer kernels.   I suspect there is enough of a difference in this older Rocket model, that the new ath79 image does not have everything needed.  I'll kick off a test build that adds back in the ar71xx rocket-m image to confirm still works.   We'll likely have to build both ath79 and ar71xx images to support all the Rocket models, let's see.

Bill, can you capture the
Bill, can you capture the support data download from link at bottom of Administration page, then upload here.  I want to see if I can find the specifics of what is different in this older Rocket model.

This device has a ubiquiti
This device has a ubiquiti boardid, from the vendor flash area of "0xe1b5".  This is the same a another (non-USB port) Rocket XM I have.   The table we accumulated over the years, records the Rocket w/ USB port as "0xe105".     I did not find anything in the boot logs that seemed to be different for all the hardware found.  It is a mystery so far.

Does anyone else have a Rocket w/ USB port to compare -- will it upgrade to ath79 3.20.3.0 image?

Just for fun I tried to
Just for fun I tried to upgrade from the version you shared to the 3.20.3.0 and it failed again (same results) So i went back into recovery mode and installed back to the version you shared and again that worked fine.

Old Rocket
Upgraded 3.19 with the upgrade image on your download link and it upgraded OK. Using the upgrade link on the website fails.

Same results
Hi I am having the same results with the old rocket m5 with USB. 3.19.3.0 loads and boots OK. 3.20.3.0 loads but does not function. I will try the link you provided to see if it works.

Try the image at the link
Try the image at the link below for the old Rocket XM with USB.   The new images built in the new 'ath79' architecture may not be very flexible and work for these older revisions.   This test image is the current nightly build, but built with the older target image 'ar71xx'.   it might work.

upgrade works
Hi Joe sorry for the delay in testing this. The factory bin throws up a checksum error, but if I installed the aredn-3.19.3.0-ubnt-rocket-m-factory.bin and then the sysupgrade, it installs. Obviously the likes of the tunnel clients will no install. But this look like the way forward.
thanks

Check tomorrow Mar 26, 2021
Check tomorrow Mar 26, 2021 for the Rocket XM ar71xx target image to be in the nightly build.

Summary:  the Rocket XM devices with USB ports now have an image available in the nightly (and next major release).  The ath79 images do not work on this old hardware rev.
