Hi there, Don (N3LP) here.

I'm thinking about putting up a AREDN mesh node at my QTH in FM19nd, the Howard County part of Laurel MD.
I seems to be in a bit of a bowl without the best coverage; see my coverage maps at http://n3lp.ampr.org/.
I'll probably start with the 2.3 ghz node as it has better coverage than a 5ghz node.

Anyhow, if anyone within the coverage area wants to give it the ole' college try, please reach out to me at n3lp@n3lp.ampr.org and lets see if we can get something going.

I do have a 900 mhz 802.11ah AP (stock, not running AREDN firmware) up and running; the coverage is supposed to be much wider. If anyone has the kit to test this out with me please let me know.

Also if anyone knows of a forum/discord/net/something for talking ham digital comms in Maryland (even old school packet) I'd appreciate the pointer.

Hi, Don:

I recommend starting with an indoor device like a Mikrotik ac2 or ac3 or GL iNet AR750,
then tunnel with nearby existing AREDN nodes.
Use the world map and contact an existing tunnel server operator.
This will put a dot on the AREDN World Map so that others might find you.
I recommend 5 GHz devices for future RF links.

Thanks. I was able to pick up a used Ubiquiti M5 for cheap and a few broken Ubiquiti M2s, and got one of them working again (shorted safety diodes on the ethernet connector). Trying to figure out how to get up on the roof to mount them for decent signal range. I also had a Silex AP-100AH Halow (900mhz) access point that I reverse engineered and built an OpenWRT and then AREDN release for (see https://github.com/barberd/aredn-silex-ap100ah). So hopefully before too long I'll have a tunnel plus RF on three bands.

I still have two more broken M2s that I'm working on getting going again. Unfortunately its not as simple as a shorted safety diode. On one of them one of the ethernet pairs on the main SoC chip is no longer working (the eth0 in linux). The chip has another ethernet device (eth1 in linux) thats not actually connected to anything on the board so I'm trying to rewire to that and then remap it in software so the AREDN software still works with it, maybe with a custom dtb. It requires soldering four wires to the QFP IC's .4mm pitch pins and its tedious work to get both the wires connected and not create a solder bridge so haven't quite gotten it yet, but fingers crossed I'll have the patience and luck to get it working soon. Haven't diagnosed the third one fully yet but I suspect the repair will be something similar unless i'm just lucky with a bad ethernet transformer (an easy fix). If I get either of them going then I'd be happy to sell them at cost to any hams in the area. The outdoor rated antennas, especially omnis, aren't particularly cheap tho so those will end up costing more than the radio.
