Nightly Build Firewall Behavior Change


This may only affect a few users, but the dev team thought we should put the word out so no one was surprised.

The nightly build that will be released as 20250129 changes a firewall behavior.

As it is now by default, if your node (usually a hap of some sort) didn't have a WAN connection, it would go out over the mesh to find an Internet link.   It was difficult to make sure this wasn’t happening and not very obvious how to prevent it.

The change implemented in tomorrow's build is the addition of a new switch which will determine if LAN devices of your node can reach the Internet over the AREDN network.  And it will be defaulted to off which is a change from current behavior.

Nightly Build Update 01 December 2024


Now that we’re about halfway to the next production release, here’s an update on where the AREDN software is at. Since the last production release there have been almost 100 changes to the AREDN codebase. There are improvements both to the new UI and the backend processes, some small and some significant. Here are the changes that may be of interest. Note that the old UI has been deprecated and removed from the code.
Testing Highlights
Testing of these features would be very welcome:
  • Mobile UI. The AREDN UI is finally mobile friendly. But the developers only have a few phones, so more testing or more different phones would be a great help.
  • Backup & Restore. You can now backup and restore device configurations.
  • LAN NAT & 44NET modes. You can now use ARDC's 44net subnets as a device’s LAN addresses. We’ve also improved LAN NAT to support larger address ranges.
  • New Mikrotik AC device firmware. The radio firmware for Mikrotik firmware has been updated. As this is a binary blob we don't have good visibility into how well it works in real world...

AREDN Production Release 3.24.10.0 is now available.

 

The biggest change in this release if you haven't been keeping tabs on AREDN, is the "new UI". The User Interface or UI is how data is presented to a person. The old UI, written in LUA not only looked old, it was hampering the implementation of new features.  Now written in JavaScript, among other things it's more economical on bandwidth used to display the user interface.  It's also much easier to add new features. The new UI has taken 6 months and the work of many, many people. We’d like to thank everyone involved with developing, documenting, and especially debugging this; we really appreciate our community!

Because it's new, navigating around it may initially be a challenge. Steve, AB7PA, keeper of the AREDN docs, has done a stellar job in documenting the new UI. It's highly recommended you at least skim them, here: http://docs.arednmesh.org/en/latest/ Within the new UI you will also find a Help button for every dialog. Please press it and read the inline help at least once. New User Interface in Development

Coming to an AREDN nightly build near you soon - a shiny new UI :-)

19.07 Release Status Update

The upcoming release of many new devices, bug fixes, and capabilities still has a few issues being worked out:

1) The OpenWRT release that AREDN is based on, recently published another release candidate rc2, and there is a rc3 in the pipeline. This means we are still days/weeks away to see the OpenWRT official release.
2) There are 2 identified issues so far on Rocket M5 XW and Nanostation M5 XW devices still being worked.
3) Many models do not yet have any know testing to confirm all is working.

Call for Code 2019 Global Winner Announced

Prometeo was announced the Call for Code 2019 Global Winner on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the award ceremony held in New York City. After intense judging from IBM, the David Clark Cause, the United Nations Human Rights Office, the American Red Cross, and other subject matter experts in the first round, the eminent judges ranked the five finalist teams and selected Prometeo as the winning solution.

Prometeo not only wins the 200,000 USD grand prize, but open source project support from The Linux Foundation, meetings with investors and mentors, and solution implementation support through IBM's Code and Response initiative. The team also won the People's Choice award on October 4, where thousands of voters chose Prometeo as their favorite solution.
