AREDN Release Notes v3.19.3.0 – 23 March 2019

The AREDN team is pleased to announce the general availability of the latest stable release of AREDN firmware.

Since our last stable release just 6 months ago, the AREDN team has made significant progress. We now fully support 55 devices from three manufacturers, and support an additional 4 devices with some cautions. This diversity of supported equipment enables hams to choose the right gear for a given situation and budget.

Our documentation has been vastly improved. If you haven't seen it recently, please look at the --ONLINE DOCS -- link under the Docs tab on the Main Menu bar. Our documentation is available to download as a PDF so that you can read it offline at your convenience.

  1. AREDN firmware is now based on the most recent stable version of OpenWRT 18.06.2 released in January 2019. This includes a current version of the Linux kernel. This improvement is significant in that it enables AREDN firmware to benefit from the many bug fixes, security improvements and feature enhancements provided by developers around the world.

  2. Current AREDN nightly builds can be loaded onto any supported (or ‘in testing’) Ubiquiti device by using the TFTP method.   If the version of AirOS is v5.5 or lower, then the AirOS Web Interface may be used to load AREDN.   The bootloader provided with AirOS 5.6 and higher will check for official “signed Ubiquiti firmware”...

Hamvention 2017 Mesh Network Forum

Saturday, May 20, 2017
Forum Room 2 at 1:30 pm

Moderator:  Bill Curtice, WA8APB, Miami Valley Mesh Alliance (MVMA)

Hams around the world are now building radio-based high speed digital mesh networks across their cities using microwave technologies and low cost commercial hardware adapted for Amateur Radio use.  Mesh provides flexible, high speed wireless communications that can be adapted to varying terrain types, can be rapidly deployed, are fun to build and use, and are particularly well suited to the EmComm needs of many served agencies.

The MVMA is delighted to host Andre Hansen, K6AH, of the Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) Project, speaking on how to build an effective AuxComm, high-speed data network based on Ubiquiti airMAX products and the AREDN Project’s firmware.

Andre will describe a 3-tiered architecture---using illustrations of actual installations---where AREDN implementers in San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties have combined to cover over 16,000 square miles with a potential of supporting Incident...

Hamvention 2017

The AREDN Project and the Miami Valley Mesh Alliance will have a large presence at Hamvention 2017. We will be in booth 1001 in Building 1 at the Greene County Fairgrounds near Xenia, Ohio. The dates are May 19, 20 and 21, 2017.

We are planning to conduct several demonstrations and answer all your questions about how mesh networking can aid your local emergency response agencies. In the AREDN Forum under General Discussion we have a thread to collect your suggestions for what you would like to see demonstrated.

In Forum room 2 on Saturday, May 20th, from 1:30 to 2:30, Andre, K6AH, will deliver a brief intro to AREDN mesh networking and discuss a simple, yet successful implementation technique that has been used to provide coverage throughout 5 counties---over 16,000 square miles---of Southern California; standing ready to serve the disaster services needs of over 18 million people.  The deployed ham in this scenario delivers these services with an investment in gear, over and above an existing VHF go-kit, of well under $100.

This presentation will show you how you may be able to do this in your...

Randy Smith, WU2S will present an overview of AREDN mesh networking at 11:00 am in the Sarasota County Red Cross headquarters building. Randy will describe how a high-speed data can support your emergency communications. He will cover how to plan a network, what equipment to buy, how to get setup and why you should consider putting AREDN at the center of emergency prepAREDNess.

More information about the location, schedule, presentations, accommodations and restaurants can be found on the West Central Florida section website.

Yuma Hamfest 2017

Andre K6AH from the AREDN team will conduct a seminar on Saturday, February 18  at 10:20  on the effort to federate independent AREDN networks across California.

Conrad KG6JEI from the AREDN team and his friends of the Amateur Radio Tower Trailer Team will also be present. Mesh will again be apart of the demo operations planned from the trailer station so please feel free to come by and talk a bit about MESH or anything else Amateur Radio.

New mesh additions this year:

  • Local Access point: an open WiFi network will be made available to connect into. This is a method used by local EOC's deployments to bring the non-ham's onto the network. Browse the services at your convenience
  • Digtial/MESH ATV: A PTZ Camera similar to the ones used at many sites here in SOCAL
  • Additional "service" demo's

Out of respect for the balloon launch which is scheduled to be carrying an AREDN payload on channel -2, our local mesh operations will likely be on channel 1 with an SSID of AREDN-20-v3. Stop by the trailer for more details of coordinated frequency usage on site.
