ARRL Call to Action in Defense of Part 97 Allocations in the 3 and 5 GHz Bands

The FCC WT Docket 19-348 and WT Docket 19-138 will severely curtail growth of one of the newest and most effective means for Amateurs to support emergency communications.  Existing installations will be severely curtailed or, with no reasonable alternatives, be forced to cease operations.  Thousands of hams have built or are in the process of constructing high-speed data networks in the 3 & 5 GHz ham microwave allocations.

Background

AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) was an outgrowth of the ARRL working group on High-Speed Multimedia (HSMM).  It has evolved over the past 10-12 years from its first implementation by Broadband Hamnet (BBHN).  Over the years the AREDN Project has developed software support for nearly 70 commercial wireless routers---moving them from their Part 15 allocation into adjacent Part 97 allocations in the .9, 2, 3, and 5 GHz bands---providing an inexpensive and easy way for hams to implement high-speed (up to 144 Mbps) data networks in support of Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs), Non-governmental Agencies (NGOs) and first responders.  The project has twice been recognized by the league for the significance of its achievements by awarding the Project the ARRL Microwave Development Award in 2014 and 2018.

AREDN Receives Grant from Yasme Foundation

The AREDN Project was recently honored by the Yasme Foundation with the award of a $7000 grant for the purchase of a 20 GHz spectrum analyzer.  The analyzer will be used to understand the characteristics of 802.11 protocols in the unique, long-distance mesh, configurations of AREDN implementations.  It will also afford us the ability to measure, and perhaps, improve the quality of transmissions emanating from AREDN-supported devices.

The AREDN Project team is grateful to the Yasme Foundation for taking the time to consider its need for a spectrum analyzer.  Andre Hansen, K6AH, in speaking for the entire team said, “To be awarded this grant is particularly gratifying for us because it acknowledges the value the AREDN Project affords Amateur Radio.”

The Yasme Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation organized to support scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio. Their support includes long distance communication (DXing), the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing nations and encouraging youth participation in amateur radio.

Ham Radio 2.0 Interviews AREDN Developers

Jason KC5HWB continues to produce a great series of ham radio videos on YouTube. In Episode 159, Jason interviews Joe AE6XE and Darryl K5DLQ from the AREDN development team. They describe the many improvements in the latest AREDN release version 3.18.9.0 and talk about the development process. They discuss the expanded list of supported devices which now includes the newer Ubiquiti AIrMax models and several units from Mikrotik.Joe and Darryl tell the viewers about our plans to provide a Raspberry Pi firmware installer which is being developed by K6RUN.

Installation Instructions for Mikrotik Devices


Download the Mikrotik .bin and the .elf file from downloads.arednmesh.org location:

  •  elf  :  this is the image to boot the mikrotik device with.  It only uses RAM on the device (which is lost with a power cycle and still boots with Mikrotik OS)
  • .bin :  once the device is booted with the .elf image and running,  copy this up to /tmp and type a command that will update the flash with AREDN, so it then boots AREDN on a power cycle.
 
The procedure is very different and it is the opposite of a Ubiquiti installation.  Opposite in that with Ubiquiti, the device is a tftp server and the tftp client is run on the laptop to send up the image.  With Mikrotik, the device is a tftp client and the laptop has to be configured to run a tftp server (also dhcp and bootp server)  on a linux or windows machine.    This is all done by a program called dnsmasq (it has all 3 servers).

Tennessee Public Safety Interoperability Exercise and Conference August 13-16

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), the Tennessee Advanced Communications Network (TACN), United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), and the Tennessee National Guard are sponsoring the Tennessee Public Safety Interoperability Exercise / Vital Connections 2018 August 13-16, 2018 at the 117th Regimental Training Institute, Building 500, 7th Avenue, Smyrna, TN 37167 

Local AREDN mesh networkers will be present at the upcoming event. This event will host a wide variety of Public Safety and Amateur Radio Communications Support partners. There will be demonstrations of the many features that an AREDN MESH has to offer.  Contact Tom K1KY directly for more information.

​AREDN Offline Map Submit Tool Updated

 

Darryl K5DLQ developed a command line tool that allows operators to submit nodes to the AREDN map without requiring the node itself to have internet access (direct or via Mesh Gateway).
It has been updated so that OMS.exe version 0.9 updated to point to arednmesh.org
This application runs on Windows.

To use it:

  1. Downloads the AREDN Offline Map Submit (OMS) tool from here:  http://bit.ly/arednomstool
  2. Extract the contents of the zip file to a folder on your PC (no installation required)
  3. Ensure that your PC is connected to a node as a LAN device.
  4. Ensure that the node is connected to a VLAN capable switch that is configured with VLAN1 (WAN) access to the internet.  (OR, use an AirRouter that is connected to the internet)
  5. Open a command prompt in Windows
  6. Run the following command from the folder that you extracted the OMS tool into:    oms.exe

​Hamvention 2018 Initial Report


This brief note is just to let youknow that all of us in the AREDN booth had a great time meeting hundreds of people in Xenia, Ohio. I am still a bit tired after al the activity, dismantling the booth, packimg the gearand driving 10hours back to New Jersey. So please be patient and I will have a fuller recap of our activities there soon.

A very special thank you goes to the members of the Miami Valley Mesh Alliance, and Markand Karen Herson, who so ably told the story of why an AREDN mesh network is so effective and how to use u=it for a variety of practical purposes.
